What if I’m visiting a country and there’s a warning for parts of it?

We want you to be safe out there and make sure you stay covered, so we advise all our overseas holidaymakers to keep an eye on smartraveller.gov.au for any updates to the countries you’re planning to visit before you go. Then if things change before you get there, and a warning is issued for a location you’ve booked to visit, you can make a claim to cancel or alter your holiday.

We watch out for you where we can, but we’re not your mum. It’s up to you to be responsible for yourself and avoid risky areas. We sell thousands of policies online, and collect very little information in the policy application about what you’re doing or where you’re going. So we like to make restrictions on certain destinations where we can, but just remember that some places are extra risky because of the Government warning of ‘Do not travel’ or ‘Reconsider your need to travel’, they are excluded from cover under your policy!

That said, situations around the world can change at a moment’s notice. So if there were no warnings before you left and you suddenly find yourself in dangerous circumstances overseas, call our 24 hour emergency hotline for advice and support.
