Q. Can I buy travel insurance after departure?
Sorry, we don’t offer insurance cover for your holiday once it’s already started. Find out more and what to look out for if you buy after you go.
Because there are many countries in which we cannot provide the same high standard of emergency services to you because the country is too risky or unsafe. For example, there are surfing and diving schools off of the pacific coast of many Central American countries, like El Salvador. But El Salvador has become known as the murder capital of the world! Our policy is designed for smart travellers and families keen on relaxing holidays, not for travel in countries where your life may be seriously at risk doing everyday activities.
To explain further, there is no cover for places that the Australian Government has issued travel advisories of ‘Do not travel’ or ‘Reconsider your need to travel’. So if a country has serious warnings against travel issued by the Government, we block them from our site, which means we will not sell you a policy for cover in that specific country.
Wherever you end up, we want you to have a great time. If you buy a policy from us, keep an eye on smartraveller.gov.au for any updates to the countries you’re planning to visit before you go. Sometimes things can change before you get there. If a serious warning is issued for a location after you bought your insurance and booked your trip, you can make a claim to cancel or alter your holiday – so it’s always worth checking to see if there’s a new travel warning before you go on holiday.

Yes, however for us, the distinction matters. We think holidays are meaningful events, so we designed our policies and the way we look after you to cater for ‘what really matters’…
