What you need to know.

Get good delay cover

Look for delay cover that allows enough to cover the the total you’ve already spent on booking flights, accommodation, activities or your cruise, in case an unexpected event (like a volcanic eruption), strands you on holiday. During the Iceland volcanoes in 2010, hotel rates escalated overnight, some charged more than EU1,000 per room – as they took advantage of travellers who were stuck.

Check medical conditions cover.

Be wary of policies that don’t offer you the chance to declare your medical conditions upfront. It’s better to know exactly what you’re covered for when it comes to your health, rather than taking a chance. Many travel insurers do ‘underwriting at claim time’. This means that if you need medical treatment overseas, they’ll require access to your doctor’s notes to examine your medical history. If you’ve had any similar problems in the past, they’ll decline your claim.

Worst case scenario cover

We never want to think about it, but if something did happen – you want to know that you have cover for decent medical treatment and  if you require a medical evacuation, that you’ll receive first-rate care from a specialist team with aeromedical expertise. Even if you cut costs elsewhere, always choose insurance with a high limit for medical cover, unlimited is best!
